English Parlor Knitting

Jacqui taught her first class on English Parlor Knitting, which is a knitting style with the right needle supported by the right thumb and positioned like a pencil.  Andy sat in on the class and I popped over for a few minutes – long enough to realize that I was interested enough that I was neglecting some other work I should have been doing.  Oops. The process-knitter part of me took over. Jacqui is going to be teaching more sessions on this method, so I’ll have to arrange my time so I’m free during one of them.

Jacqui is a great teacher, very knowledgeable and able to present this method in a step-by-step way that advances you through everything (such as hand positions and yarn tension).  Even though I typically knit holding the yarn in my left hand (somewhat Continental style), learning to use my right hand in this method was not too difficult – but certainly needs some time to master. Practice makes perfect.  I also firmly believe that learning something new and/or challenging will keep me young forever.

We would love to see you come in for a class or just drop in to work on your current project. Jacqui will be teaching this class again Wednesday May 15, 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. Click here to register online.

Summer at the Woolie Ewe-niversity

We have a fantastic line-up of classes to get your summer started off right. From knitting basics to (yes, we heard your requests!) socks and cables, from beginning crochet to granny square purses, we have class offerings for every skill level.

One of our new offerings is UFO Drop-in.  You bring in a project you are struggling with, need help finishing or just want some extra attention or motivation to finish and we’ll help you get it finished.  Seating is limited, and we’re starting out with scheduling this every Friday from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. This is Andy’s pile of UFOs that are in her office here at the store….I think she needs to get a seat this Friday, don’t you?

I’m really interested in the Solomon’s Knot Shawl crochet class. The shawl is such a light, wispy accessory that I can see it being one of those great items you just always throw in your bag or toss on before you head out for the day.

SolomonsKnotShawl_zoom

We have  new lower prices for just about all of our classes and we would love to help each and every one of you learn something new.  Classes are scheduled during the day or Tuesday or Thursday evenings, so we hope you find something that fits your schedule.

Cheers,
Jenn

Shadow Capelet in Techno

I just finished up the Shadow Capelet pattern from the folks at Blue Sky Alpacas.  Using three skeins of Techno, the capelet is knit in the round and then turned inside out so the wrong side of the work is actually the outside (and you don’t have to purl the entire thing!).

For a peppy, cheerful look, I chose Posh Pink and Cha-Cha Red as stripes to go with Fame (the cream).

Techno is soft and light, but it is a very insulating yarn – I was working on this inside a chilly coffee shop and it kept my lap quite warm. The capelet is the perfect size to tuck into a handbag in case of over-zealous air conditioning when you are out and about in the summer.

Pattern: Shadow Capelet from Blue Sky Alpacas, designed by Merri Fromm

Yarn: Blue Sky Alpacas Techno; 1 hank each of three colors, shown in #1970 Fame,  #1976 Cha-Cha Red and #1981 Posh Pink

Custom Knits Accessories

It seems to be the season for new books! We get one or two new books delivered every week. Yesterday, it was a box of Wendy Bernard’s latest book, Custom Knit Accessories.  Like the other two Custom Knits books (focusing on sweaters), Custom Knit Accessories describes the design starting points of accessory pieces, shows patterns using those design starting points and gives you tips to customize the patterns, too.

The focus of this book is Accessories and Wendy covers all types – things for your head, things for your hands and feet, plus things for your neck, such as shawls, cowls and more.  The diagrams shown at the beginning of the chapters help the reader visualize the design techniques and math involved, with Wendy’s helpful voice coming through in the text.   This is an illustration from the book about shaping the crown of hats (these illustrations are provided for just about every type of project).

Even if you have no interest in learning the mechanic of creating/designing accessory pieces, the patterns in this book are must-knits.

Feature of the Week: May 21

Easy-to-wear, open-front cardigans have been the trend for a few seasons, and this summer is no exception.  This raglan cardigan with a lace inset on the sleeves and garter stitch trim is an easy fit for any wardrobe.  Divino from Lana Grossa feels silky smooth and has plenty of drape without losing shape.

Pattern: Design 6, Filati Pocket Issue 2

Sizes: 36/38, 40/42

Yarn Required: 9, 10 balls of Lana Grossa Divino

Feature of the Week: May 14

An aptly titled pattern, Cruise Ship is the perfect packable cardigan for cool nights on the sea.  With short sleeves and an open front, it also makes great vacation knitting, in case you don’t have time to finish before you set sail.

Ripple, one of the season’s most popular cotton yarns, adds texture and interest without requiring any fancy stitch patterns.

Pattern: Cruise Ship Cardigan by Rosemary Drysdale, in Collage

Sizes: Small (Medium, Large, XL, 2X, 3X)

Bust: 34 (39, 43, 47, 51, 55)”

Yarn: Tahki Yarns Ripple 5 (6, 7, 8, 9) balls, shown in #1 Pearl

Fiberphile Squooshy Sock

For all you fans of sock yarns, be you a sock knitter or not, we’ve had this wonderfully squishy and soft sock yarn in the house for a little over a week. The colors are very rich and I’ve been having a hard time not adding one skein of each color to my take-home basket.  (Okay, I did add them, but then I put them back on the shelf. A couple of minutes later I put a few skeins back in the basket.)

Colorway: Aslan. This may or may not be a color still remaining in my take-home basket.

I’ve been browsing through all the patterns on Ravelry – sock, shawlette, sock-weight sweaters, you name it, I’ve looked at it for this yarn.  Looking at patterns is generally followed by adding more yarn to my take-home basket.

The following are all Ravelry links

22 leaves shawlette by Lankakomero – LOVE the leaves on this shawl – it makes me think of kelp floating gracefully in the currents.

Plain and Simple Pullover by Veera Valimaki – Sweaters out of sock-weight yarn are wonderful for Texas. The folded collar and faux-buttonhole shoulder seam catch the eye, while the cap sleeves make this piece great for layering with a long-sleeve shirt.

AIilbe by Kristi Geraci – The twisted stitches on these mittens really highlight depth of color in the yarns used, and this strikes me as an ideal project for your most favorite color of sock yarn.  Don’t hide it beneath shoes and pant legs, but wear it on your hands for cheering up on cold days.

#15 Lace Pullover by Dora Ohrenstein, Vogue Crochet 2012  A tunic with a ripple stitch pattern, this crocheted top has a loose and lacy appearance which is quite elegant.

What do you like to knit or crochet out of sock yarn?
