Shhh…It’s a surprise party!

This is short notice, but we didn’t want the secret to get out — The Woolie Ewe is throwing a Surprise Retirement Party for Roxane! Yep, after nearly 12 years, Roxane has decided to embrace the good life and spend more time with her husband, kids, grandsons and, of course, with her yarn stash. So, when you see her in the store after Thursday, she’ll be relaxing in a comfy chair, just visiting and knitting.

Her last day of work is this Thursday, May 16, so please stop by any time between 10:00 and 4:30 (her scheduled work hours) to wish her well and leave a note in her memory book. Since Roxane is such a huge coffeeholic, we’ve decided to celebrate with free K-cups and goodies all day. Just bring your best leak-proof travel mug to enjoy all the coffee, tea, cider, and cocoa you’d like. We’ll even have a cooler of ice and plenty of flavored syrups and cream so you can recreate your favorite iced coffee flavor. Keep in mind that absolutely no straws or disposable cups are allowed in the store, so please remember to bring your leak-proof travel mug.

In addition to sending Roxane off with coffee and goodies, we’re having a special sale in her honor. This nursery rhyme makes me think of someone who is kind and generous, with a big heart and a bigger yarn stash. That’s Roxane, right?

Bah, Bah, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes, sir, yes, sir, three bags full,
One for my master, one for my dame,
And one for the little boy who lives down the lane.
Bah, Bah, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes, sir, yes, sir, three bags full.

The Bah, Bah, Black Sheep Sale starts on Roxane’s retirement day, This Thursday, May 16, and continues through Saturday, May 18.

Fill a paper bag with your choice of specially marked yarn for $45, or fill three paper bags for $120.

We’ll provide the bags. Your savings will vary depending on your yarn choices and how much you squish — just don’t tear the bag!

Pantone Color of the Year for 2013 – Emerald

Pantone color of the year 2013 image taken from Pantone.com

When I think of Emerald I think of calm and tranquil waters. Sounds odd, I realize, but that’s the truth. I also think of jewel tones – likely because the name itself evokes the thought of a jewel. Why am I waxing on about a color?

Pantone has announced its pick for Color of the year-

“PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald, a lively, radiant, lush green, is the Color of the Year for 2013.”

“Green is the most abundant hue in nature – the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “As it has throughout history, multifaceted Emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate. Symbolically, Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world. This powerful and universally appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors.”

I expect to see Emerald popping up in a lot of knitting in 2013 as it is such an amazingly versatile color. Used as a main color or simply an accent, Emerald really does shine.

The Woolie Ewe & Ravelry

Many of the Woolie Ewe’s customers are familiar with Ravelry and the benefits that come from being a member of this free resource. It’s a great way to keep track of your stash, needles, patterns, and host of other things as well. I can’t count the number of times I’ve pulled my phone out and looked something up on Ravelry to answer a query for a customer.

Because of this, I am constantly surprised when someone isn’t familiar with Ravelry.

So here’s the skinny/deal on Ravelry and what it means for the Woolie Ewe:

Ravelry is a free resource for fiber enthusiasts (knitters, crocheters, weavers, yarn dyers etc.) It is in essence a huge database of yarns and patterns. Members can keep track of their stash, patterns, and needles. They can join individual interest groups, search for a pattern (free and paid), and share their projects with other like minded folks.

The Woolie Ewe has a group on Ravelry. What does this mean? It means that Ravelry members that are customers of the Woolie Ewe can share their projects, ask questions, and in general share their love of their favorite LYS.

When the group was formed in 2007 it was decided that members of the group would get something special. Something exclusive. Members of the Woolie Ewe Group on Ravelry received 10% off of regularly priced yarn. There were checks for this of course. For a while there was a printed copy of the member list at the register (when the group was still small enough).

As Ravelry exploded on the yarn scene the member list became unwieldy and tags were given out with a promise that the tags would be used for really exclusive events. [Things didn't work out for the initial tags.] Finally as a way for us to keep track notes were made in customer files.

Currently if you are a member and we don’t have a note, we check the member list on Ravelry and update your information.

What being a member of the Woolie Ewe Ravelry Group means to members now:

  • Members receive 10% off regular priced yarn
  • Notification of exclusive sales
  • Receive an exclusive Woolie Ewe Dog Tag.
  • Great online community!

Now here’s the thing about the Dog Tag. Regardless of tag, if we have the notation that you are a Ravelry member you get the 10% discount. We are planning several events that will require you to show us the tag even if we know you are a member. (I often recommend keeping the tag with you in someway just in case.)

If you aren’t a member of Ravelry or a member of our Ravelry Group here is how you join:

  1. Go to Ravelry. Signing up is free. All you will need is a valid email address.
  2. Once you have signed up and created a username, click on the “groups” tab located at the top and do a search for Woolie Ewe. The actual name of the group is called My Stash Comes from the Woolie Ewe. Once you are on the group page there is a button on the right side towards the top that says join group. Click it.
  3. The next time you come in tell us what your username on Ravelry is. We will verify that your name is listed in the group and make the notation in your file, then give you a dog tag.

For current and new Ravelry group members if you would like to learn how to use Ravelry (and get the most benefit out of it) we will be hosting one or two free classes per month.

A New Year, A New Ewe

Happy New Year!

The Woolie Ewe rang out the end of 2012 with its annual End of Year Sale. This year’s sale was an eye opener for me personally. I had no idea how much everyone looked forward to this particular sale. New and old friends came out to shop with us and yarn flew off the shelves. Thank you to everyone that made the sale such a wonderful experience.

Starting the first week of January the Woolie Ewe is counting inventory and will be closed until Saturday, January 5th.

Aside from changes to the layout (not to worry – yarn will still be sorted by weight) you will find some other changes as well. One of these changes has been on the top of our own to-do list for a while as it has been a request from many customers and it’s one that we are happy to be able to make.

Staff TagsDuring the End of Year Sale you might have caught sight of some of us wearing shirts with Harriet on the back of them. (If we weren’t bundled up in our cardigans!) Unless Andy decides to make these shirts available to the public you can pretty much count on anyone wearing one to be a Ewe and willing to help out.

However, if you don’t see a Harriet shirt, check for a black lanyard with pink lettering. All the Ewes have one.  It’s much cooler than a bulky name tag, don’t you think?

We look forward to seeing everyone again on Jan. 5th, until then keep your needles and hooks busy!
