Knits to Give project series, part four

The final project we chose from Knits to Give is the Baby Shawl.  The lace pattern will work well in  a wide color palette so you can easily coordinate with nursery colors.

Ideal for learning to read your knitting and reading written out lace patterns, the shawl is a basic rectangle filled with the lace pattern repeat (which means no shaping).  Knit in soft and squishy baby-friendly Baby Cashmerino, your finished project is sure to be loved upon and cuddled.

The shawl uses 10 balls of Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino, shown in pale pink.

This project is our final part of the Knits to Give project series and will be meeting on Thursdays, April 12 and 19 from 10:30 – noon.

As we’ve mentioned before, the class is free but requires the purchase of the book (Knits to Give by Debbie Bliss) and materials.  If you attend the classes for all four projects, your book will be free and we offer a discount on the book for each project you attend if you are unable to participate in each project ($5 off the book for the first project, $10 off the book for two projects, $15 off the book for three projects).

Give us a call to reserve your space in the class and purchase the book.

Knits to Give project series, part three

Baby booties seem to be standard knitting fare and who can resist these bunny booties?

We’ve scheduled this class so that you have time finish them for the arrival of the Easter Bunny.  The booties can be fiddly to manipulate and require picking up stitches, but with our assistance you won’t need to worry.  We’ll cover everything you’ll need to do to end up with a pair of adorable bunnies for a special little someone’s feet.

One pair of booties uses Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Dk, 1 ball each of Duck Egg Blue and Ecru, plus small amounts of Chocolate yarn for the embroidery.

This class will meet Tuesdays, March 6 and 13 from 10:30 – noon.

I’ll cover the remaining project in a further post, but here is an overview:

Baby Shawl -  reading stitches in an easy lace pattern using Baby Cashmerino (10 balls)

Bonus for all of our loyal readers: Here is a coupon for you to use at the store through Monday January 23, 2012.  Either print it off to bring in or pull it up on your smartphone at the register. If you are one of our on-line customers, enter the code Buy2Get2 when checking out on our website.

Knits to Give project series, part two

The second project we chose as part of the Knits to Give project series is the Lion Cub Scarf.  The main reason we selected it is because so many knitters come to us and say that they are scared and intimidated by intarsia. So many fabulous projects use this technique that it is a shame knitters won’t attempt them.  Let us change your mind in this class.

The Lion’s face is charted out, so you’ll learn to read the chart for the colors and shaping. The technique of changing colors is not complex and by the end of this project you’ll be able to do it without much thought.  The remainder of the scarf (including the back of the head) is completed in one color, so the small area of intarsia is perfect for learning and practicing a new technique.

This project will meet on Thursdays February 9 and 16 from 10:30 to noon.  The scarf uses Rialto Dk: 3 balls of Caramel, 1 ball each of Orange, Ecru and Black.

I’ll cover the remaining two projects in  further posts, but here is an overview of them:

Bunny Booties – picking up stitches, following pattern directions and face embroidery using Cashmerino DK (1 ball of main color, 1 ball of contrast)

Baby Shawl -  reading stitches in an easy lace pattern using Baby Cashmerino (10 balls)

Knits to Give project series, part one

We’re always looking for new things to interest our customers and this spring we’re trying out a series of classes from Debbie Bliss’ book Knits to Give.  Each project will meet twice – we’ll get you started and go through the pattern for each project.  We selected a variety of items each with a different technique for you to learn or improve your skills. The classes are free, although you must purchase the book and the supplies for each class.  If you sign up and attend the classes for all four projects, the book will be free.

The first project class is the Garter Stitch Baby Jacket.  Knit in garter stitch  and in one piece, the only seaming is the sleeve seam.

This small project is ideal for learning about short rows which are used to shape the yoke. Smaller, low-stress projects like this are great for practicing techniques like short row shaping and seaming. Even if you don’t have a little one around to wear this sweater, knitting it as practice can improve your knitting confidence and skill level (which is basically the criteria we used for each project we chose for this series).

This class will meet Tuesdays January 24 and 31 from 10:30 to noon.  The yarn used is Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino (which comes in a wide color palette) and you’ll need 3 or 4 balls, depending upon which size you’d like to make.  Give us a call to sign up and purchase the book.

Also – Debbie Bliss yarn is currently 35% off, making it a great time to get your supplies for class.

I’ll cover the other three projects in more detail in further posts, but here is a quick overview:

Lion Cub Scarf – an introduction to intarsia and color charts using Rialto DK (3 balls of main color, 1 each of three contrasting colors)

Bunny Booties – picking up stitches, following pattern directions and face embroidery using Cashmerino DK (1 ball of main color, 1 ball of contrast)

Baby Shawl -  reading stitches in an easy lace pattern using Baby Cashmerino (10 balls)

Debbie Bliss Cable Jacket

Some of you may have envied Linda P. for her gorgeous jacket and drooled over it when she wears it in (the lucky dog).  But, a lot of people are intimidated by the multiple cable patterns and shaping all happening at the same time.  Have no fear! We are offering a class to knit this exquisite piece from Debbie Bliss’ Cashmerino DK collection.  The class is going to meet every other month, November through May, to give you time to work on the pieces and ideally have an almost completed jacket by the end of the class.

The cost of the class includes the yarn, the book and  Linda’s shaping and cable notes plus her first-hand knowledge of knitting this piece.  You will need to provide needles, stitch markers, cable needle and all the other knitting paraphernalia.

Class begins Wednesday November 9 at 10:30.  The other sessions will be on Wednesdays January 11, March 7,  and May 9, 2012.

If you are looking to challenge yourself for the new year or want assistance and companionship when knitting this piece, join us for this class!
